Venmo’s privacy overhaul puts new users in control by default

In a move that addresses years of privacy concerns, PayPal-owned Venmo is rolling out a redesigned mobile app with stricter default privacy settings for new users. Starting with the refreshed onboarding flow, any new account created will automatically restrict post visibility to a user’s approved friends list, rather than exposing activity publicly.

Venmo responded to the 2021 report by introducing granular privacy controls, allowing users to hide their friends lists and restrict transaction details. While those tools remain available, the new update addresses a core issue: default behavior. New users no longer have to manually adjust settings that, for years, left their financial and social activity visible to strangers by default.

What changes for new and existing users

For anyone creating a Venmo account after the redesign rolls out, the onboarding process will now prompt users to confirm their privacy preferences before their first post or payment. The default option sets visibility to "Friends only," meaning only users in their approved contacts list can view transaction histories and activity updates. Users who prefer broader visibility must actively select a more public option during setup.

Existing users are not affected by this change. However, Venmo has not indicated plans to retroactively update legacy accounts.
