OpenAI has upgraded ChatGPT’s default model to GPT-5.5 Instant, a version of its new flagship GPT-5.5 large language model (LLM), and introduced memory sources—a feature that lets users peek into the context influencing responses. While this marks a step toward transparency, the system only reveals some of the factors behind an answer, leaving enterprises with fragmented audit trails and potential inconsistencies.

A new transparency layer with blind spots

The memory sources feature, enabled across all ChatGPT models, displays which saved memories or past conversations shaped a response when users click the "sources" button beneath an answer. Users can also manage which sources the model cites and ensure these citations remain private when sharing chats. OpenAI highlights this as a way to personalize responses and maintain up-to-date context.

However, the company acknowledges a critical limitation: models may not reveal every factor that influenced an answer. While OpenAI pledges to expand this capability over time, the current implementation offers only partial observability—not full auditability. The model also enhanced photo analysis, image upload handling, and STEM question accuracy, while improving its ability to choose between internal knowledge and web search when needed.

Peter Gostev, AI capability at independent model evaluator Arena, pointed to the model’s overall text rankings as a key indicator of progress. "Since GPT-4o, the strongest-performing OpenAI chat model on the Arena has been GPT-5.2-Chat," Gostev explained. "GPT-5.3-Chat, the previous default model in ChatGPT, ranked 44th overall—32 places below GPT-5.2-Chat. GPT-5.5 Instant’s competitive edge remains to be seen, but its predecessor’s performance suggests high expectations."

Organizations integrating GPT-5.5 Instant into their workflows should treat memory sources as a supplementary tool rather than a replacement for existing auditing systems. To mitigate risks from competing context logs, enterprises should:
