GitHub Copilot shifts to usage-based billing in 2026 with new credits system

GitHub Copilot will replace premium request units with GitHub AI Credits on June 1, 2026, aligning costs with actual AI usage while keeping base plan prices unchanged.

GitHub is overhauling its Copilot pricing model to shift all plans—Pro, Pro+, Business, and Enterprise—to a usage-based billing system starting June 1, 2026. Under the new structure, users will consume GitHub AI Credits based on token usage, including input, output, and cached tokens, rather than counting premium requests. The move aims to align pricing with the rising compute demands of Copilot’s agentic capabilities, which now support long-running, multi-step coding sessions and repository-wide operations.

Why GitHub is changing Copilot’s pricing model

Copilot has evolved far beyond its original role as a simple in-editor assistant. Today, it functions as an agentic platform capable of executing autonomous coding sessions, iterating across entire codebases, and leveraging the latest AI models. While these capabilities deliver substantial productivity gains, they also require significantly more computational resources.

The current premium request model no longer reflects the true cost of usage. Heavy agentic workloads, such as running multi-hour coding sessions, consume the same premium requests as brief chat interactions, placing unsustainable pressure on GitHub’s infrastructure. Usage-based billing replaces this outdated system with a model that ties costs directly to resource consumption, ensuring long-term service reliability and transparency.

Key changes in the new GitHub AI Credits system

Starting June 1, 2026, premium request units (PRUs) will be replaced by GitHub AI Credits, which are deducted based on token consumption rates published for each model. Several critical adjustments accompany this shift:

  • Base plan pricing remains unchanged. Copilot Pro ($10/month), Pro+ ($39/month), Business ($19/user/month), and Enterprise ($39/user/month) retain their current costs. Code completions and Next Edit suggestions remain included in all plans and do not consume credits.
  • Fallback experiences will be discontinued. Previously, users who exhausted PRUs could continue working via lower-cost models. Under the new system, usage will be governed by available credits and admin-controlled budgets.
  • Copilot code review will incur GitHub Actions minutes. In addition to AI credits, code review operations will consume standard GitHub Actions minutes, billed at per-minute rates identical to other workflows.
  • Annual plan subscribers will transition gradually. Users on annual Pro or Pro+ plans will retain their current premium request pricing until their subscription expires. Upon renewal, they will shift to the new system, with model multipliers increasing on June 1, 2026. At that point, they may upgrade to a monthly paid plan or revert to Copilot Free.

What’s changing for individuals and organizations

For individual users, Copilot Pro and Pro+ plans will now include monthly AI credits equal to their subscription price—$10 for Pro and $39 for Pro+. Annual subscribers will see adjusted model multipliers upon renewal and can opt into monthly plans with prorated credits for their remaining annual value.

Business and enterprise customers will also retain their seat-based pricing ($19/user/month for Business, $39/user/month for Enterprise), each bundled with monthly AI credits matching the plan cost. To ease the transition, existing Business and Enterprise customers will receive promotional credits for June, July, and August: $30/month for Business and $70/month for Enterprise.

New organizational features include pooled credits, allowing unused credits to be shared across teams, and granular budget controls. Admins can set spending limits at the enterprise, cost center, or user level, with options to allow additional usage at published rates or enforce hard caps once included credits are exhausted.

Preparing for the transition

GitHub is providing early visibility into the new billing model through a preview bill experience launching in early May. Users and administrators can view projected costs before the June 1, 2026, transition by checking their Billing Overview on github.com. The company has also temporarily adjusted Copilot Individual plan limits, pausing self-serve Business plan purchases to stabilize performance ahead of the broader rollout.

For more details, consult GitHub’s billing documentation for individuals and organizations. A dedicated FAQ and discussion thread is also available to address common questions.

As Copilot continues to mature into a full-fledged agentic platform, this pricing shift ensures that the service remains sustainable, scalable, and aligned with real-world usage—benefiting both developers and the platform itself.
