Building a Regulated Vertical with Claude

Discover how to create a powerful Claude stack for regulated industries, streamlining workflows and unlocking efficiency

The majority of AI workflow posts oversimplify Claude's capabilities, treating it as a basic text box. However, when building for regulated industries like law firms, this approach falls short. Over the past year, I've developed Claude-powered tooling for law firms, and the lessons learned can be applied to other regulated verticals such as accounting, medicine, and finance.

Understanding the Claude Stack

The key to unlocking Claude's full potential lies in recognizing it as a runtime, not just a chat tool. By leveraging its layered platform, developers can create powerful workflows that integrate with various tools and systems.

The Claude stack consists of several components, including Projects, Skills, MCP connectors, Cowork, Artifacts, Memory, Claude Code, and the API. Each of these components serves a specific purpose, and when used together, they form a robust architecture for regulated industries.

Layering the Claude Stack

To create an effective Claude stack, it's essential to layer the components in a way that addresses the specific needs of the vertical. The layering I've found to be most effective includes:

  • Layer 1: Projects, which provide a persistent workspace for each matter or engagement
  • Layer 2: Skills, which encode the firm's playbook as code, allowing for reusable instruction packs that define style and process
  • Layer 3: MCP connectors, which enable seamless integration with tools like Google Drive, Gmail, and Slack
  • Layer 4: Cowork, which allows for agentic multi-step task execution
  • Layer 5: Claude Code, which provides terminal-native dev workflows
  • Layer 6: API, which enables the creation of custom products and integrations

By understanding how to layer these components, developers can create efficient and effective workflows that streamline processes and improve productivity.

Best Practices and Common Pitfalls

When building a Claude stack, it's crucial to avoid common pitfalls, such as failing to set up Projects or underutilizing Skills. By recognizing these potential pitfalls and following best practices, developers can create powerful and efficient workflows that drive business value.

As the adoption of AI continues to grow, the ability to create customized Claude stacks will become increasingly important. By understanding the components of the Claude stack and how to layer them effectively, developers can unlock new opportunities for innovation and growth in regulated industries.
